If you’re a long time scroller round these parts then you will know that for the past year or two my brows have been exclusively put into place and beefed up thanks to the Hourglass Arch Brow Pencil in Soft Brunette. I can practically write down its name without even having to look down at my keyboard. In that time I’ve been through two, raved about it countless times and have barely gone a day without using it. But this time round when the nub made its last stroke I was feeling a bit naughty and instead of repurchasing my trusty Hourglass, I cheated. I know, I know – I feel awful, but the Anastasia Brow Wiz in Soft Brown was an itch I just had to scratch and I’m bloomin’ happy that I did because now I see what all the fuss was about.

Texture-wise the two are pretty much the same. A waxy texture that sets things in place while giving off a natural, non-shinny smudge of subtle pigment. The big difference here is how they are deposited. The Hourglass is cut into a rectangular, quite thick edge and so leaves a block of colour when applied, whereas the tip of the Anastasia nib is so tiny I had to get out my macro lens to photograph it (and it still didn’t show up that well!), making it easier to mimic singular brow hairs.

But here’s the thing – shock horror – I actually think I prefer it. I can get a much more precision finish and the end result doesn’t look so blocky. I do prefer the colour of the Hourglass and it’s much quicker to apply, so I’m pretty sure I’ll make a repurchase at some point for good brow days when I just need a quick tidy up, but right now I’m thinking that the grass is greener on the other side of the brow fence. Watch this space.

I ordered it a couple of days ago and now I’m even more curious about how it’ll turn out! PS What are you wearing on your lips, Anna? They look adorable!

  • http://style-affinity.blogspot.co.uk/ Claire

I’ve never tried either of them, but I think I’d prefer the Anastasia pencil. I worry that using a brow pencil on my brows will look too harsh so I’ve been sticking to my MAC Omega eyeshadow for a long time now. Maybe one day I will be brave enough to try one haha!

Have you seen Soap & Glory’s revamped Archery? It’s pretty much identical and much cheaper (and easier to get hold of)… might be worth a comparison? xx

Cool that you like it. I’ve purchased one as well last week and I’m looking forward to starting my ‘new’ brows-gardening.

Anna, you should try the Kevin Aucoin one – same thin nib. I too was an Hourglass idoliser until I discovered it! Xx

I’ve been using this since I had to source from US & am SO happy it’s now available in the UK. A godsend for blondes as it’s so natural with zero red undertones.

    There is no going back!

I’ve had the brow wiz for a while and didn’t like it at first but having rediscovered it I’ve fallen in love. It’s particularly good to use in conjunction with a brow gel (I’m currently testing the new Rimmel one) and then just feel in what that doesn’t cover.

Also if interested Sleek do a pretty good dupe for the Hourglass pencil which I love

I love how easy it is to make natural looking brow hairs, and the Brow Wiz became a very quick favorite. But, after hauling it in my makup bag everywhere and dropping it a few times, it did crack in several different places on the inside. Im currently using the MAC eye brows pencil which is thicker than the Brow Wiz, and a bit harder to get a natural affect, but it has a twist up dispenser which helps the product from breaking.

I tried this and wasn’t really a fan for the price. It is perfect if you have the time to draw on individual hairs but a pain if you want to quickly perfect your eyebrows in the morning. I did a review on it over on my blog!

I have the exact same complexion as you and the same haircolor.. You should try the brow wiz in the color Medium Ash. It looks more natural (if that’s the look you are going for). As the soft brunette is a quite bit on the warmer side and it can look a litte ‘too much’ sometimes. Xx

  • http://www.lifesetsail.com Brittany Messner

Too funny, I myself was just scrolling through the Sephora website and settled on this pencil…part of me feels like I’m giving in, but most of me is just intrigued! I also figured out that it’s cheaper per oz. than my usual Clinique pencil…it’s a win, win! I am however questioning my shade choice now that I see you’re using Soft Brown, but we shall see ;) xx

  • Talia Henman

I absolutely love my Hourglass Arch Brow Pencil, however! I have been through 5 pencils in just over a year due to the crayon part snapping inside the pen and mysteriously disappearing! I have only managed to use one pencil all the way down (I lost another)….am I cursed or does anyone else have this problem? I would really love to re-buy for a 6th time as nothing does the job better, but I’m a bit reluctant to part with £26 for this to happen again!
