Since I nabbed the newly released Bourjois Happy Light Foundation around a month ago it’s barely left my face. Of course there’s the odd competing formula that gets an application, but for the month of October the Happy Light has reigned supreme as my face base of choice. The question on everyones lips has been ‘Why?’ so I thought I’d get down to the nitty gritty and give you lot the low-down on the good, the bad…and for once there’s no ugly.

Happy Light boasts promises of a ‘luminous and flawless complexion in any light’ on the bottle – a bit of a bizarre claim. I would peg it as a straight-up liquid foundation texture that when applied leaves the skin with a satin finish – nothing too dewy, nor too matte – just a skin-like sheen. The coverage is light-to-medium depending on how much you dollop on and your application. With fingers it’s tinted moisturiser-esque (for instance my little red cheeks pop through a little), but with a buffing brush things get a bit more covering. I’m sporting it in the picture above (excuse the dreamy appearance, #NewLensProblems) for reference. Sans powder it goes for about six hours or so before things need touching up and the light texture means that powders and creams can be built up over the top without things getting cakey.

The good part? I managed to purchase it at a mere £7.99 while on introductory offer at Boots, though its full price is not too wallet walloping at £11.99. The bad? The colour range. It’s pants. I slap on 50 which is the lightest shade, though I wouldn’t say it would be suitable for the English roses amongst us and at just a total of five options in the whole range they’ll be more than a fair few who are stuck without a colour match.

The question is this or Healthy Mix? I’ve given the various guises of Healthy Mix a go over the years – the original, the gel textured one, the radiance reveal one (my favourite of the bunch), but I have to say that the Happy Light comes out on top. I sometimes find the Healthy Mix formulas to be a little bit oily-looking, whereas this imparts just the right amount of dew with just the right level of everyday coverage. The staying time is around the same, but finish wise if you want something with more coverage and a glowier look then go for a Healthy Mix option or for a satin finish with a more tinted moisturiser feel then Happy Light is your guy. Bourjois bring it with the base, again.

I have this and the downside for me was the shade choice, I went a shade lighter thinking it would be good for a/w and it’s even darker than my healthy mix shade, so odd! I think I’d like it more if I had a lighter shade.

So disappointing about the shade range! I really like the sound of this, but I’m so pale it’s a little off putting. We’ll have to see how we get on I suppose x

I tried to test this last week and the choice of shades is so disappointing. I’m the palest in Healthy Mix Serum and the palest in this is about 2 shades darker. I was hoping it would be a rubbish foundation so I could at least not feel sad about it!

This foundation looks great on you, Anna. I am tempted to give it a try. But almost everything drugstore cosmetics purchase turned out to be disappointment for me. If I go for high end makeup, it never fails to deliver. Drugstore – mmmm, not so sure….

Keep an eye on ASOS, sometimes new products will crop up. That’s how I was able to score the new cream bronzer.

So many things I want from Bourjois. So many it’s too long if I mention everything but Happy Light foundation just skipped everyone and went straight on top of my list. Been looking out for an everyday foundation that imparts a dewy finish without looking oily so safe to say this will be my guy too.

Ps Anna you’re such a beaut in the above picture ;)

  • http://ilovemakeupandotherthings.blogspot.com/ Shel

Anna, you look beautiful in the picture! I didn’t even realise Bourjois had a new foundation out, this seems like one I definitely need to give a go. I’ve already had the 10 Hour Sleep Effect foundation from Bourjois which I would class as a light foundation, so I’ll be interested to see how this one differs (or not!)

Thank you for your thorough review. Can I pm you about possibly obtaining these items for me? I live in the US where Bourjois is not sold. Of course I will compensate for the products, shipping and your time. I don’t know where else to find someone that has access to a number go items in their product line? Just the same, would you like to obtain any makeup/beauty products from the US? I’d be more than happy to help with that. I’m a superb shopper-always on the lookout for new and limited editions. I also shop smart and try to use discounts whenever possible. Please contact me at: [email protected] if you are willing to work with me. Thank you and take care, Amy

    • Emy

You can purchase this on ASOS, which ships for free in the US.

      • Amy H.

Thank you. I did see that, but Asos only carries a limited selection of the brand. I was hoping to obtain a lot of their powder and liquid foundations so that I can find out which one that I like best. I may go through a delivery service. Thanks again! :)

  • Genanimal

What is the name of shade 50?

    • Amy H.

      50 is called Porcelaine. :)
