I’m not sure there’s ever been a nail polish so out of my comfort zone. A black gel suspending large chunks of garish golden glitter, Deborah Lippmann’s Cleopatra In New York is no shrinking violet in the nail polish world. But something about it called out to me. Forgotten were the memories of the industrial strength removal process it took to take off the last glitter varnish from my tips and instead the way that the flecks sloshed around in the bottle and caught the light were at the forefront of my mind. On it went and, yep, it’s love. A completely different love to my usual Nail Inc Porchester Square-y or CHANEL Rouge Noir-y shades – this is more of wild shade that you want fellow tube passengers to eyeball as you grasp the bars to steady yourself, you know? Subtle, it is not. The only downer is that it took a patience-testing four coats to work up the colour/glitter combo to what you see here. The first coat is so seriously lacking I ended up googling swatches to see what I was going to end up with. Persistence pays off though and you’re left with some of the most ‘in-yer-face’ but still chic nail looks I’ve ever seen.

There’s a price to pay for such a kick-ass shade; £18 to be exact, from Look Fantastic. But for such a one-off piece that’s destined to be the star of your lacquer stash….. stuff it, I’ll let the pictures provide your justification.

This is such a gorgeous colour! I’m not sure I’m patient enough to sit there apying four coats, but the end result does look worth it!

That is such a special polish, I love it! But the price tag and the number of coats is definitely off putting I’d never get them all on before I smudged it to death :( x

  • Ciara Pollock

wow this is absolutely beautiful; though the price tag is quite off putting :(

£18 for a four coat nail polish! Not sure about that. I’d expect a one coat wonder for that price!

  • http://nevrdullyoursparkle.tumblr.com/ Anna

It’s very pretty. I love the look of Deborah Lippman’s nail polish, but for me, it takes too many coats for the price.

  • Amber Hunter

I’m in love with how this looks on your nails! It is pretty expensive but I feel like especially with that color it’s worth the price. Is that with or without a top coat? If without the finish is so shiny!

    Lovely Notions

  • SalaraSays

Looks lovely but knowing I need to apply 4 coats to get this finish would mean I would rarely be bothered to use it. And at £18 I couldn’t justify it.

  • Faith Warde

So pretty! Love a bit of glitter on my nails xx

I picked up some Deborah Lippmann polishes in HoF last weekend, they had 10 or 12 colours in there for £5! So I picked up a couple, I was shocked at how sheer they are, they take some determination!

To sum it up, this shade is gorge! If it wasnt for the (hefty for a nail polish) price tag I wouldn’t think twice about adding this to my online shopping bag!…Im curious to know how hard it is to take off though! lol

I think, considering that I can buy 2 separate black and gold glitter polishes for half the price I would not buy this. I love it, but I’m thinking if I get the gold glitter coat alone then I can control when and how much glitter I want on my black base, for example I’d love a gradient glitter.
Also a full golden accent color would go great with the rest of the glitter nail. I love them on your fingers! It definitely looks very chic (imagining carrying a chic chanel bag) :D .

Make sure the black you get is a jelly! Otherwise it won’t have that look of depth.

This looks gorgeous Anna – we should all step
Out of our comfort zone occasionally. Otherwise
We’d never discover lovely new things! I am currently
Sporting a nude nail which is the total opposite
    Of my normal Rouge Noir.
I’m a relatively new subscriber and loving your blog :)

  • Maddison McConnell

How many coats did you apply Anna? I own this nail polish, and I have never been able to build it up as you have! And my lord, industrial strength remover and a lot of patience are a necessity with this nail polish!

  • i.s.

    what a gorgeous color! x

  • Ida

if you liked this I highly recommend “Glitter in the sky”, also by Deborah Lippmann. It’s a pale greyish blue infused with light pink and blue glitter. It does require a bit of a build-up to get a nice amount of glitter, but it’s so stunning.

  • PeonyandPeach

DL polishes have never particularly appealed to me, mostly because it isn’t too difficult to find dupes but this one is stunning and I’ve never seen anything like it from another brand!! I’m converted!!
