When I mentioned the inclusion of Blu Cantrell on my running playlist in my latest fitness update, the most thumbs-ed up comment came from Steph who said, “Can I just say that now I feel a post sharing your running playlist may be in order. You can’t just name drop Blu Cantrell and leave us hanging…Inquiring minds must know!“. Well Steph, this one goes out to you and fellow inquiring minds. I must add a bit of a disclaimer here that music really isn’t my forte and hasn’t been since the ’90’s when I used to compile my own mix tapes by recording snippets of songs off the radio. So my tastes are pretty old school, mainstream and booty-shaking (whenever I get asked what genre of music I like best ‘booty-shaking’ is always my answer). It’s also worth noting that I listen to the same playlist, in the same order, each time I go running. This might seem a little dry for some, but I now know by whichever song is playing what kind of mileage I’m up to which is a good motivator for me. So without further ado, welcome to my running playlist:
Badman Riddim by Vato Gonzalez – Sorta angry and high paced, this gets things rolling.
Beautiful by Snoop Dogg – The first mile is always the hardest for me, so I really need Pharrell in my ear telling me that I’m beautiful, ok?
Blurred Lines by Robin Thicke – I have no idea how this song even made it on here, because I’m really not a fan. However I somehow believe that the faster I run, the faster it will be over.
Breathe by Blu Cantrell – A audio reminder to breathe, which is always handy. But I seriously love this song. Like, love. I always try and mime the Sean Paul rap because it’s my favourite bit.
Can’t Hold Us Down by Christina Aguilera – TUNE. I don’t think there’s anything else I can say.
Clique by Kanye West, Jay Z and Big Sean - A good beat to run to – not too fast or too slow. Plus the Kanye rap always makes me laugh for some reason.
Cry Me a River by Justin Timberlake – My favourite J.T song. My vocal abilities by this point are limited so I just manage to mutter the ‘OOOhhhh’ bits that Timbaland chimes in with.
Drop It Like It’s Hot by Snoop Dogg – Fun fact – I know the all the words to this song off by heart. I’ve never seen shock in Mark’s face like the first time I rapped my way through this.
Get Lucky by Daft Punk - This is my ‘Anna you can do it’ jazzy, happy, feel-good song. A pep up just when I need it.
Hold On, We’re Going Home by Drake - Nearing the end of my run by this point now, the hook of this song seems very appropriate.
Hungry Eyes by Eric Carmen – My favourite bit of Dirty Dancing (ending aside) is the montage to this clip, so that combined with the fact I’m nearly finished makes me a very happy chappy.
No Scrubs by TLC - The anthem of my youth. I always try and finish things off before the Lisa ‘Left Eye’ Lopes rap comes in so I can catch my breath and mime my heart away.
I know, I know. Someone will be snapping me up for a DJ gig before you know it…
