Revlon Lip Butter Review

Well a big song and dance was made when the Revlon Lip Butters made their way to UK shores, wasn’t there! The Beauty Blogger hype parade came into town! After seeing the US peeps go on about them I promised myself I wouldn’t give into pressure, but sure enough I began trying to scout them out! Silly Anna! It wasn’t easy, these little sticks of lip balm are difficult to come across, and if the drugstore does have them then 9 times out of 10 you’ll have only 6 colours to choose from. In the end I found a small display and picked up the shades Strawberry Shortcake and Peach Parfait.

For those of you who have been living under a rock I’ll quickly explain. The Revlon ColourBurst Lip Butters are a mix between a lipbalm and a lipstick, designed to add colour to the lips while stilling being moisturising. There are 14 shades available (20 in the US and Canada) and they retail for £7.99. The actual appearance of the them is pretty impressive, encased in a quilted tube matching the colour of the product, it’s a nice idea. But that isn’t where my problem lies.

Firstly I’d say the shade range disappointing especially for nude lip lovers like me. Although the swatches on the Boots website makes it look like there are quite a few pale lip offerings from the swatches I have seen on blogs there isn’t really one particular colour that floats my boat. Also a fair few of them have a frosty finish, which is something that really doesn’t appeal – the shade that I got Peach Parfait, is crammed with golden glitter. I found the formula of them to be surprising. I thought they would have a lot of slip on the lips  and be super balmy and moisturising, but I’ve found the Lip Butters to be more on the thick side and not be particularly moisturising. However this does mean that they last quite well on the lips, about 2-3 hours which is good for a glorified lip balm.

These won’t go completely unused in my collection, the shade Strawberry Shortcakes makes a nice Summer bright, but they aren’t going to be squireling their way into my lip product must-haves anytime soon. What are your thoughts on the Revlon lip butters? Are you an avid collector, or just bemused and confused purchaser like myself? Let me know!

  • Jollybeachang-Angela

I have Lollipop which I bought in the US. It is nice and colour is lovely but I haven’t bought any others. I think they are difficult to find in the UK and the colours aren’t too fab. Wish we got all the colours like our US/Canadian friends x

  • Charlottem38

I totally agree!! Like you I promised myself I wouldn’t give into the hype but failed miserably the second they came out. I like them, but I don’t love them like I thought I would… I am a sucker for a bit of quilted packaging though :)

    Love your blog btw x

  • Mary-elizabeth10

I tried them out in store the other day, I was really excited and thought I would love them due to the hype they have been given, but I was a bit dissapointed! they are not actually that great, I wasn’t blown away by the texture and I really like nude colours without frost too so that was also annoying :”( I have to say I prefer the new L’Oreal Rouge Caresse Lipsticks -better packaging too :) great review x

  • beautyandablogger

I feel the same way about them! I just don’t think they live up to the hype but I often find that’s the case. I bought Strawberry Shortcake too and think it looks awful on me but I love d the swatches :( won’t be buying anymore! xx

I picked up peach parfait today and am not impressed. Pretty packaging but thats it, and have to say Michael Korrs lip butters kick it’s ass to be frank! Wish I’d saved my pennies.

I had a good friend of mine pick up some colors for me in the UK and she shipped them off to me yesterday. I cannot wait to get them. Unfortunately the UK has only a few of the colors available or at least I heard the color-range in the States is bigger.
Still looking forward to get them. I saw some swatches on a German blogger site (who had gotten them shipped from the US) and they looked amazing!

Are Creamsicle or Creme Brulee available to you? Both are great, shimmer-free nudes!

  • Samanth19

i went into superdrug today and i was disappointed. they’re too sheer for me and are far too frosty x

I absolutely agree — they’re way overhyped.  This whole idea of combining a lip colour and a lip balm was kind of a miss.  They’re not emollient enough to actually hydrate or velvety enough to deposit pigment.  I bought two and I feel like I’ll end up giving them away.  That said, some of the colours are really gorgeous on the lip.  If only they lasted! :P

can’t wait to try these lip butters…guess i have to wait a bit more till they arrive in my country :s

I think you’d love Creme Brulee, if you can get it :)

  • Nicola

Im not sure on these. Im the same, i love nude lips and i don’t find something from this range which is compatible with my skin tone and taste.

i looked in superdrug the other day with my mum, then decided i never wear anything other than a bit of vaseline on them at the beginning of the day! plus i find it really hard to find a nice pink to match my weird skin tone.
they were a little too frosty for my liking too! xx

  • styt

Im totally a collector! theyre great for on the go and moisturise my lips beautifully giving that nice hint of colour…Im a fan =)

Not too fussed about the lack of nudes myself as on my pigmented lips they just make me look ill.
I got Lollipop and its ok. I might have another look if I see them on offer, but don’t think they’re too special. Bit overhyped in my opinion.

I picked up 3 on the weekend and so far so good! I’m not the biggest lipstick fan as I have quite dry lips so these work perfectly for me! I can see why some wouldn’t like them though. I don’t think I’ll be spending a fortune on them to build up a collection, but I’m happy with the 3 I’ve got. XX

I bought one yesterday (sugar frosting i think) and even though its pretty on the lips..really sheer pale pink with a slight gold running through it i dont think its too forsty for me-  but i have to say i really dont get what all that hype was about! its ok but nothing extra ordinary and to be honest im not sure its even worth £7.99 im not really pulled in by any of the brights either- and usually i like a bright lip :P

I love these. I have them in four colors and can’t wait to get more.

I think the lighter shades are a little frosty and glittery, which is why I don’t fancy them much. In my opinion, the darker colours feel more balmy and apply better. My favourites are Lollipop and Sugar Plum.

have been wanting to try these for ages!

  • Fleurdeforce

Really surprised you didn’t love these! Did you try creme brule? It’s a nice nude with no frost – sounds like you’d like that one :) xxx

  • all about the girl

So disappointed, I’ve been dying to try the Peach Parfait but not sure I like the sound of the glitter :( hrmm, decisions decisions!

I bought a L’Oreal Caresse lipstick instead because I also don’t like shimmery frosty lip colours. The L’Oreal version is really moisturising and lovely!! xxx

  • http://pearlsandpurls.wordpress.com/ Gem

It’s nice to hear a different view on these! I must admit they don’t appeal to me either. I’m a sucker for a matte lip myself x

Hi Anna, I just nominated you for the Versatile Blogger Award….check it out!

I quite like these, as I like the option of the sheer colour with one layer and then another layer for a more opaque finish. I picked up Creme Brulee, Sweet Tart, Candy apple, and Tutti frutti which all suited me better (nc30-35) got these whilst they were 2 for £10 at boots with my points – yay!

  • phoebe

I only purchased one after the hype. Normally they wouldn’t have made it on to my radar and I’m hugely disappointed. I think it’s because I expect lip stick pay off, not a sheer tint. I agree about the frost though!

  • Lauren

I Bought one in Vegas this year (Berry Smoothie) and while I like it, I much prefer burts Bees lip tint balm! Smell better and work better! The lip butters are over hyped, there’s nothing really that special about them I thought

  • cat_mcmullan

I checked them out in boots but didn’t enjoy them, like you said they all seem to be crammed with glitter! I would recommend the L’Oreal Carresse because they have the same idea behind them but in my opinion are so much better. I love them :) especially Nude Ingenue xx

  • http://fabfingertips.blogspot.com/ Esther (Fab Fingertips)

I rushed off to Boots in search and I agree on the colour choices, they just didn’t make me go ‘wow!’ so maybe I might pick one up another time but at the moment I’m in no hurry!!

  • RachelH

I have the colours lollipop and berry smoothie. I think they’re quite nice in my opinion.. especially lollipop for summer. I haven’t tried the L’Oréal range yet, but they also have some tempting colours! :)

  • http://www.stylecandi.blogspot.co.uk/ Hayley

I know what you mean! I totally joined the blogger hype and bought oneof the Revlon Lip Butters the other day, I bought ‘Strawberry Short Cake’. Its defo more of a night/summer shade for me, im more of a nutral girl and tdidnt think this would be as pigmented as it is.

one of the colours not available in the UK seems so perfect for pale skin- Creamsicle. this needs to come to the UK!xx

  • Claudiapritt

I was so disappointed by tutti frutti…. it is too much pigmented and it creases on my lips =( but creme brulee it’s amazing!

  • JemappelleJess

I love them. The only thing that disappointed me is there are some shades I want that are only available in the US :/ -http://lashingsofmascaraon.blogspot.com/

  • Ying Cheung

i am loving the Lip butters~ amazing consistency for the price. I got tutti frutti, cupcake and Sweet Tart. They were definitely worth the wait and the hype :)

  • Emily Has Dimples

I’m a bemused and confused collector like yourself! Went to swatch them about 4 times before purchasing, and was completely unimpressed, but caved..Candy Apple…not a good choice. I really think they’re overrated!

  • suite-pee

I was expecting so much from these! Bought Peach Parfait the other day and though it’s nice enough it’s a tad glittery for my liking and also feels quite heavy on my lips. I really expected a more glossy feel? I’ll still use it though!

  • Alice!

I really want to buy one but I’m not too sure I want to part with the money if I won’t like it :( xx

  • Nikki

I love the Creme Brulee Lip Butter!

    Check out my blog….

  • Ela

Probably the only time I have ever disagreed with you, I love the lip butters. Think they are really great for their price, a nice alternative to other pricier options :) You should try Tutti Frutti, Berry Smoothie and Pink Truffle! x

  • Tiffany

Nooo I disagree I love the Revlon Lip Butters! As Ela said you should deffo try out the Tutti Frutti one! It’s amazing!

I’m so late on this post.

I picked up two from my local drug store. Peach Parfait, and Creamsicle. I have naturally flush lips, and I find really soft, more saturated, colours look strange on me. Creamsicle is on the nude spectrum. It is also my everyday go to, if not Korres Laurel. It’s a subtle shade that really enhances my natural lip colour. I don’t think that they are really that moisturizing. However, for the price I think these are nice butters for casual days, beach days, holiday, etc. I see that commenter Lucy has heard of Creamsicle. It is a really nice shade. It’s really too bad that the shades are limited in the UK.Love your blog.CA
