And so the lip product cycle turns again. High coverage lippies were swapped for glassy glosses back in the noughties, only for a shift back to opaque lipsticks to kick in again in more recent years, but now we’re hungry for a more lighter kind of offering; a slick of a sheer pigment for the lips and they’re flooding the beauty halls right now. And with good reason too – what’s there not to love? A bullet that delivers equal amounts of gloss and colour, they’re easy to throw on, require minimum top-up attention and the demi-gloss finish ticks all the right boxes for daytime use. Here the top five sheers that reign supreme in my stash.
Burberry’s Lip Covers pop up in many a lip lovers favourites, but their light and luxe little sister, the Lip Mists, never seem to get the nod they deserve. I own the shade Nude Peach (an obvious choice for me, much?), and find its natural, non-sticky finish to set-off an everyday smokey eye nicely. A more notorious choice, Revlon ColourBurst Lip Butter’s, was the one that got the ball rolling. Brining a polished, subtle pout to the aisles of the highstreet, I rather like the daring-but-not-too-so dark shade Red Velvet. It may be the most drying texture out of the bunch, but hey it sticks around like it’s ramped-up coverage counterparts. Two that sit in the same ‘sheer but high gloss’ category are Shu Uemura’s Rouge Unlimited in BG922* and YSL’s new Rouge Volupté Shine in 5*. Catering for the lipstick/gloss hybrid corner, although on opposite ends of the perky pink spectrum these both offer a high clout of colour with a ‘just licked my lips‘ sheen. I’m growing quite the soft spot for the the latest addition to YSL’s lipstick lineup recently. I’ve spoken of my impressions on the sheer but spendy Tom Ford Lip Colour Shine in Insidious* already so I’ll spare you the rave again. But it’s good. It’s really good.
A sheer slick of semi-saturated colour, an easy wear for lipstick virgins and lovers alike. The way this cycle goes, I give it two years before we’re clutching at our Lancôme Juicy Tubes again…Â
