Sometimes a product completely knocks my socks off. So much so in fact, that it also knocks the socks of their competitors, their predecessors and the originals. Whether they’re superior in form, function or there’s just something that you can’t quite put your finger on; we’ve all been there right? Welcome the ‘Better Than The Original’ Edit:

BECCA Shimmering Skin Perfector  Dior Glow Maximiser Light Boosting Primer. I’ll keep it brief, because a rave about this ol’ one from Dior only popped up round these parts yesterday. The BECCA is all kinds of awesome, but the Dior? It’s just glowier. I didn’t think it was possible, but it manages somehow with this peachy pearl liquid to brighten up even my dullest of complexion days. A winner by just a smidge of a sheen.

Tangleteezer < The Wet Brush. I didn’t think anything could beat the Tangleteezer for me; I’ve been a dedicated user for the past two years, but when Lily told me the Wet Brush was taming her locks in no time at all post-wash I listened up. I raised my brow when she suggested it, but dayum – she’s right. I’m not quite sure what makes this perform better but it glides through my locks and combs out the tangles without a pull or a watery eye in sight. Hard to find, but worth it.

Laura Mercier Metallic Creme Eye Colour < Rimmel Scandaleyes Shadow Paint. This is another Lily-induced purchase that I finally got round to purchasing after months of me asking her what was on her lids and her replying this. I’ve never been much of a Laura Mercier fan when it came to their cream eye colours – they crease like a beyatch on me – but in terms of their liquidy texture there wasn’t anything else like them in my collection. Enter the Rimmel version with its long-wearing, crease-resistant and ‘just the right nod to shimmer’ formula. It wipes the floor with its competition.

Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler < Japonesque Power Curl Lash Curler. Now here’s a shocker – a pair of lash curlers that beat the most coveted, talked about and loved pair in the word? Crazy talk. But it’s true, I haven’t touched the Shu Uemura ones since I gave the Japonesque a fair test. If I’d discovered them before I filmed my 2013 Favourites Video, I would have stuck them in there. That’s how much I love them. It’s one of those ‘can’t quite put my finger on it’ cases again, but I think the Japonesque just fits my eye shape that little more snuggly allowing me to get right in to the root of my lashes and get curling directly from the base.

Laura Mercier Lip Glacé < Maybelline ColourSensational Lipgloss. This is a recent find, but a good’un. Now it’s not that I don’t love the Laura Mercier gloss offering – they’re some of my favourites that I own – it’s just they get a little bit messy. With continued use gloop collects in the lid and I end up with a fist full of sticky-stuff (*shudders*) after each application and so far I’ve yet to come across this problem with the Maybelline offering. They’re very similar in pigmentation, texture and application – but for packaging? The Maybelline ColourSensational’s have the edge.

Any you’d like to add to the list?

Would you still recommend the shu uemura eyelash curlers? Or shall I completely pass and go for the japonesque ones? Ooh and I’ve been loving your channel and blog so much recently ahh x

  • Evelyn Morales

I really want to try this wet brush, I love my tangle teezer but if you say its better than I have to try it out!! Cool post!

MAC LIPSTICK GIVEAWAY over on my blog!

  • Erin

Love the Maybelline Color Sensational glosses. I’ve never heard anything about the Japonesque lash curlers before! I’ll have to look into those.

  • Berrymix

I guess this is why I keep on trying out different products. Because you think you like one thing, and then another one comes that is so much better! PS. Will be on the hunt for the Japonesque lash curler.

  • Stephanie @ Love, August

Of these I’ve only tried the Dior Glow Maximizer but I haven’t had the Becca Skin Perfector so I can’t compare. It is a good one, though! I’d really like to try the Wet Brush because it has a handle – the one thing my Tangleteezer is missing.

These all sound great! I love drybar’s Lemon Drop Daily Detangler as an alternative to my tangle teezer. It detangles your hair really well, plus it leaves it shiny! x

  • Eleri Roberts

These are shockers! Definitely off to snap up a wet brush now…! xx

This is such a great idea for a blog post – especially when so many things do not match up to the original – good work Anna- cant wait to get my hands on a wet brush and attempt to tame my hagrid like barnet!

  • Harriet

Absolutely fantastic post – thank you :) Definitely want to get my hands on the Wet Brush – I love the Maybelline glosses too :) x

  • PeonyandPeach

I much prefer my old Jemma Kidd tweezers to tweezerman ones. Unfortunately you can’t get hold of them any more so I’m always really careful not to lose them!

  • Alison M

I too love the Wet Brush. So fantastic. I’ll have to give the Japonesque curler a try. I’ve tried Tweezerman thinking it would be fabulous, but it doesn’t do much for my straight lashes. I prefer one by Sonia Kashuk. But I’m always up for trying something new!

  • Brushandmakeup

Been debating buying a wet brush for a while…just purchased! X

It’s interesting how some of the cheaper items are actually better!

I absolutely love this post. Not everyone (myself included) has money to spend on expensive products, so it’s great to see that some high street finds made their way to this post. Hurrah!

  • Olivia S

I have been wanting to try the Laura Mercier Lip Glace for a while but I shall try Maybellines offering instead! Great original post… keep them coming :)

Definitely going to have to try some of these out! I never even knew about the West Brush!

I’m happy to hear about the Rimmel Scandaleyes, because I succumbed to two of Laura Mercier’s cream eyeshadow products and holy guacamole, that stuff creases. I’m always on the hunt for cream products that actually work, and if they come at a lower price tag like the Color Tattoos and this Rimmel offering, then I’m sold!

  • Shani

I’m super interested in the wet brush. But I have curly hair and only comb through my hair in the shower, so I’m wondering if I shouldn’t just stick with my wide-tooth comb…

Lily Pebbles has curly hair too – check out sone of her #TBT photos to see her natural texture.

      • Shani

Wow, I would never have known! Thanks for telling me. :) Now I have to see if I can track one down to ship to NY…

        • Strawbry_Blonde

Works on my wavy/curly barnet too – you can get them on Amazon! :)

          • Shani

Ahhh, thank you! I’m going to look it up now. :) x

  • Abby Evans

This is such a great post! I really want to try the wet brush. I have the tangle teezer but it doesn’t comb through all the layers of my hair. It just kind of smooths out the top layer of hair.

I love the look of the Maybelline Gloss, it is such a pretty colour! x

I think the Shu Uemura S Curler is better than the original! It took me a couple of goes to get to grips with it but now I have I just can’t use the original. Having said that I’m intrigued by this Japonesque one!

  • Emily Allen

Loving this list Anna, I’ve wanted to try the shu Umura eyelash curlers for ages glad to know there’s an alternative before I invested the hefty price tag x

  • Roslyn

My fav post of the month … :) love this list….. you can do this monthly …. super informative …… Thx Anna xxx

Hey I dont know if anyone below has mentioned this yet but I think the Rimmel Wake me up Foundation trumps the YSL Le Teint Touche Eclat. They are similar in ‘glowiness’, texture even smell. However the YSL seems to stick to the dry patches and flake the skin on my face whereas the Rimmel is cheaper, looks better on my skin, moisturizing and just all round a better buy for me!

  • Amy Scott

Could not believe that your beloved shu uemura eyelash curler has been replaced! I even let out a little gasp.

  • Laura Stanley-Bratley

Cannot believe you’ve found an alternative to the Shu Uemera curlers! These new ones must be incredible *finds purse and head to John Lewis website*

  • Katie Brown // Art Farm

Great list, Anna! I have to try the wet brush (tangleteezers are hard to come by in the States, but they’re becoming more common) and the Japonesque curlers. I need a new pair and I’m interested in trying something else. I was thinking of maybe the Kevin Aucoin’s… Have you tested these?

  • thebeautymist

Need to try the japonesque curlers:) x

  • Cassie

Thanks for the eyelash curler advice! I also need to get more of the Rimmel scandaleyes shadow paints.

  • Susan girlwearsGreen

Need to try the wet brush! =]

  • Annie Lindsay

Just got the Wet Brush myself and I feel like a dum dum for waiting so long to get it. It’s made a huge difference and I lose so much less hair than a regular comb.

  • Ellie

Great post! The wet brush really intrigues me! :D

great post , really want to try the wet brush sounds great !

  • Amber Hunter

It’s so interesting that in several of these, the less expensive one beats the original. Thanks for sharing all of these Anna!

I love the Rimmel eyeshadow, and use the Laura Mercier gloss, so naturally now need to grab the Maybelline!

Another product that I think is better than the original is the mememe highlighter against the benefit sunbeam. A fraction of the price too x
