Benefit Eyeliner

Just a little prelude to today’s post that I normally wouldn’t touch on, but seeing as there has been such a buzz around this launch I thought it was worth quickly giving a little nod to. Benefit’s They’re Real Push-Up Liner – years in the making and sister product to the They’re Real Mascara - you must have heard of it? Benefit have done a very good job on the publicity push for this one and though I have been able to get my hands on this product pre-launch, I have no further affiliation with the Benebabes and just generally think…well, read on for that…

I don’t need to give you the eyeliner spiel again. Me and kohl are just about getting on these days, but liquid liner created for flicks and tricks – well I’ve had my fair share of mishaps. Wobbly lines, too much product, blotchy formulas, the lot. So when I got wind of Benefit’s latest liner launch, that promises to put to bed all the aforementioned quibbles, I may have got a wee bit excited. A matte, gel formula that is deposited in a twist-up pen that releases the fluid out of a slit cut into a soft, silicone-like nib. It’s unlike anything else that I’ve used.

Even just playing around on the back of my hand I could see that the lines created were concise, easily thinned out, thickened up and did not budge once dry. Getting the perfect amount of product out took a bit of getting used to, but after a few over twists and thick black gloop going absolutely everywhere (I later found a runaway blob on my elbow), you get the knack. The marketing bumf is right too, the slanted tip really does allow you to dig into your lash line and get the colour right where you want it and the shape of the nib means you can just stamp on your cat eye without having to go all free-hand. I follow a stamp, join and fill procedure; resting the nib where I want the flick to sit which gives a good start point, joining the outer point back to the corner of the eye, filling it in and then tapering the line in to the centre of my lash line. Confused? Yeah me too, perhaps a video demo should be in the pipeline?

The only downside? Despite the longevity in hot and humid conditions being insane (it stayed impeccibly put throughout a shower, I have no idea how), oil is its nemesis. And being the barer of oily lids I learnt this one the hard, smokey creased, way. It’s a problem that is solved by a bit of powdering on the lids to prime prior to application, so nothing irreparable.

If you’re already a pro with a pot of the gel stuff and a precision brush, then it’s one to pass up. But if you’re a bit of a feline flick noob like myself then it’s definitely one to be intrigued by. It’s made me rethink a liner look as more than just a once in a blue moon occurrence and that’s a bit of a rarity around these parts. It will come in at £18.50 and will be released on 28th June. FINALLY – feline flicks for all! Just try not to get it on your elbow.

I’ll check it out when it’s in stores! I’m always looking for an eyeliner. Even though I already have too many.

It was in my 30s I have finally learnt to perfect the ‘flick’ but it has taken me about 3-4 to master. I have no problem putting on the liner, as I can draw, paint, throw pots quite well already. It’s getting the angle of both flicks identical, and the thickness the same. This looks good may have to try it out. I like pot and brushes as well mac’s fluid line etc, but honestly who has time to fiddle around with that in the morning? Pen is the way to go.
