The minute that I get home from work I throw my hair on top of my head. Without a second thought up it goes, whipped in a hairband and from that moment on it’s affectionately known as the ‘pineapple’. However if I decide to rock the ‘pineapple’ throughout the day then I’ve found a great little trick to help me achieve the perfect imperfect bun…

Ok so here’s the scenario, it’s the night before and you figure that you really can’t be arsed to do your hair the following morning (come on we’ve all been there!). All you’ve got to do is tie your hair into a high bun like you usually do, I tend to pull my hair through like I’m doing a ponytail and then only bring half the hair through at the end, then sleep on it. Simples! By the morning you would have achieved ulimate high hair bun messiness. It may need a little tweaking or a touch of hairspray to keep it in place but whenever I do my buns like this I always find they look the best!

This style is the epitome of lazy girl, but if you give it a go I promise I won’t judge ;) Everyone loves the pineapple! Any messy bun tips? Then pop them below!

I love this!  I have just bought from Ebay the “bun maker” 4 different sizes to perfect the nicest bun, but your option sounds a hell of a lot nicer! (and easier) :-) I’m definitely going to try this out this week especially as I have done something to my neck and I am on sooo many tablets!

Loving your blog, I have been following for ages!

    Lots of love Claire xx

You could use a bun donut and then pull strands out to make it a little messy. It looks lovely though! xx

Can you please do a video on this. Thanks.

  • Sheila O’Riordan

yes I use the bun doughnut as unfortunately my hair is not as thick as yours!  but I also find it great for just rolling the hair up at the back into a 40’s roll-up

Haha, good tip. I am a big fan of the messy bun look xx

Oh my hair never looks like this when I attempt a messy bun:( Video please? xox

Long time lurker, first time poster ^_^ messy bun is my go to style for major volume the next day! I put it up like yours the night before, but with kirby grips, shake it all out in the morning and have epic volume. Easy and no fuss

It looks great on you but I can never achieve the “imperfect” bun myself! X

  • Francis Dodson

I use a hair donut to do my buns…  To make them messy I just pull out random bits of hair :) I swear by it! x

  • Charlottemma

Haha I love this post! I am exactly the same.. as soon as I walk through my front door pineapple goes up! x

I can always do the ‘perfect pineapple’ when I’m lounging in my pjs but whenever I try to so it to go out I can never do it! I will be sure to check out your tip though…

Ha – I stick my hair up like this whenever I can, gives it lots of volume when you let it back down too.

  • charliperson

God Your SO lucky you can do that with your hair (looking lovely). I tried and well.. failed.. doughnuts are the only way for me :(

oh my gosh! i wore this hairstyle today and got so many compliments! Then my boyfriend saw me and just said “…what is on your head?”
he just doesn’t understand the ‘no effort’ look.

  • ellie patterson

any chance you could do a tutorial of this!? It would be a great help!

I gave it a go since 2004 and I found (and find) it looking great! Pinning some curls with glittering hairclips will give your hairstyle even a fashionably touch! Just try it! :-)

couldn’t agree more with the whole of this post. always envy the girls that can leave their hair down all day without wanting to stuff it up in a pineapple (i call it that too!)… i spend half my life trying to perfect the messy bun, ha!x
