A few Sundays back Mark and I, after an extreme crêpe eating session, sat on the sofa and whiled away the majority of the morning reading. It. Was. Lush. Mark browsed the paper, while I giggled away at Tina Fey’s ‘Bossypants’. University took the joy out of reading for me (with ‘recommended reading’ lists the size of a small library) and I was more likely to be found scrolling through my twitter timeline in bed before slumber than divulging a good book, but times are changing and after a spot of Amazon haulin’ I’m back on the book reading wagon. Even just a few pages gives me a bit of R&R time and the tech break that I never want to take but really do need. So if you’re the mood to do some page turning today I thought I would pick out my favourite reads to suit every mood. I must add that like my taste in music (see Thursday’s post for that), my taste in books doesn’t stretch much past the bestseller section, but hey – they’re all good’uns and if you want some more in-depth recommendations then Books and Quills is your gal.

If you want to laugh try ‘Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?’ by Mindy Kaling or ‘Bossypants’ by Tina Fey. Both hilarious books that had me giggling away in bed with Mark looking over my shoulder to try and find the laugh-inducing paragraph. If you’re a fan of The US Office, which Mindy wrote for (I’m still kinda convinced that Kelly Kapoor is completely based on Mindy) or Mean Girls (as written by Tina Fey) then both of these will appeal.

If you want to cry try ‘One Day’ by David Nicholls. I full on blubbed when reading the final pages of this book on my morning commute. I had to hold cold water bottles up to my eyes so that the redness went down before I arrived at my destination. I told myself that I must read the book before I saw the film and it’s been over two years since I read it and I still haven’t watched. Doh. But the book? Well the book will always be one of my favourites.

If you want to feel all fashion-y try ‘Vouge On: Coco Chanel’ by Bronwyn Cosgrave. There’s something quite classy about being clued up on CHANEL trivia, non? Well this provides a serious education on the subject. It’s not the wordiest book I’ve ever read – it’s one you could easily get through in one afternoon – but the visuals are interesting and I learnt a lot about good ol’ Coco from these pages.

If you want to feel intellectual try ‘The Bell Jar’ by Sylvia Plath or ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest’ by Ken Kesey. These are the only two classic, more brain tickling reads that reside of my shelves from my A Level English Lit days. I even think my final coursework aim was to compare and contrast these two and even though I spent many an evening going through these with my highlighter I still love them. Great books.

If you want some beauty and brains action try ‘The Secret of Scent’ by Luca Turin. Being a BSc grad I do have a little Science boffin that resides inside deep, deep down so this book just calls out to me from my bookshelf. Little molecular doodles combined with the science behind perfumes and scent. It’s so interesting and makes you think about your daily spritz of perfume in a whole new way.

Happy page turning!

Thanks for the recs! I’ve never really read in contemporary autobiographies but I think Mindy Kaling’s would be right up my alley.

I really loved the Bell Jar and luckily I didn’t have to over-analyse it for english so it’s been left untarnished!

love these book rec posts – I used to read so much but recently I haven’t…I want to get back into it and I’ve been wanting to read something light, maybe Bossypants or Mindy’s book! I also heard Ellen Degeneres put out a good read! Want to give those a go! Lovely post as per usual, Anna. Adore you and your blog! Even if you’re the biggest enabler ;) jokes…not the biggest…. :) x

Me before you by Jojo Moyes if you fancy another cry :-) I don’t want to spoil it, but I read it in my garden and my neighbour had to come and check if I was ok…

Oh I bought recently ‘One Day’. I have to read it quickly, if you recommend this one :)

I’ve had The Bell Jar sitting on my shelf for over a year now, and this has motivated me to get my wriggle on and read it! I absolutely LOVE ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest’. I’m currently a Literature degree student and I know the pain of the ‘recommended reading list’. I had planned to get lots of my own reading done this summer but of course, that hasn’t happened yet as university books have won (again!).

  • http://beautifulsmudges.blogspot.co.uk/ Chrissy

I keep meaning to read The Bell Jar, but somehow I still haven’t got round to it. Think I need to compile a little list of classics that I’ve got to read some time and then tick them off one by one! One Day was a really weird one for me, because I didn’t enjoy it at first, but now that I think back to reading it, I do quite like the story!

Some diverse choices there! I’ve had One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest on my ‘to read’ list for a while, might just have to nudge it up a few places. One Day… This one seems to split the crowd huh?! I wasn’t taken with it, to be honest. I can’t quite put my finger on why, perhaps it just wasn’t my cup of tea. Or maybe I have a heart of stone? ; )

I would avoid watching the film version of One Day, it’s not a patch on the book and Anne Hathaway is not good in it.

Great book recommendations, and I don’t think I’ve actually read any of these ones! I’ve been craving a few new reads written by some girl bosses after enjoying Sheryl Sandberg’s Lean In so much.
