Applying sunscreen on holiday, although necessary, is really a step of my Summer routine that I’m not too fond of. However, this year I took some time to do a little research into it and picked out some products that I thought would save me from my usual white-streaked, greasy, sunscreened-up self and you know what I think I picked pretty well!

For my face, the Chantecaille Ultra Sun Protection SPF 50 has been doing the trick. Non-oily, it leaves a matte finish to my skin and is a great base for makeup (if I can be bothered to put it on). It is however, extremely pricey and not something that I would consider getting again for that reason. I’ve heard good things about the Neutrogena Ultra Sheer range for the face so I might see if that could be a good and ridiculously cheaper alternative. On my body I’ve been using the Institut Esthederm Adaptasun Lotion for Extreme Sun. I bought this after seeing Ruth’s post, where she describes the technology behind this a trillion and one times better than I ever could, but in a nutshell it encourages your skin to increase it’s natural sun protection. I was a little sceptical but it’s actually worked really well, and aside from one day where I forgot to apply it to my shins (ouch), it’s kept me sunburn free, isn’t too greasy for a lotion and smells rather fab. Another body sunscreen that I’ve been using more on the go and wielding in my hands in waterparks and spritzing on anyone who passes is the Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Body Mist Sunblock SPF 45; now I don’t think this is a range that we have in the UK, which is rubbish as it’s great. Completely clear, really cooling on the skin and has been keeping my shoulders a red-free zone. Now for aftersun I think I’ve found a new favourite – the Clarins After Sun Moisturiser Self Tanning Lotion. This stuff is amazing – it soothes your skin, while giving you a touch of added glow, which I’m certainly in need of as my skin doesn’t naturally tan, but this has made me look nice and sunkissed!

So there you have it, a little ramble about my sunny side up body and face routine. And so far, I’m managed to stay burn free – aside from the mini shin incident, but the Clarins After Sun managed to clear that up within two days. Woop! The weather hasn’t been too fabulous over here for the past two days, so I managed to squeeze in time to film a haul video yesterday – keep an eye out for that – it’s on it’s way!

I got this mist in the states a couple of years ago and it was a godsend for application on the go. I don’t know why the hell its not in the UK as its brilliant as you avoid missing areas (i.e. shins :-))

If you’re looking for an alternative to the Chantecaille, I’d recommend the MAC Prep + Prime with SPF 50 – works beautifully as a primer and the high SPF is such a bonus!

I really like La Roche-Posay´s Anthelios mat fluid SPF30/50…it leaves a silky matte finish and isn´t expensive.

I have just bought this and tried it the other day. It didn’t sink into my skin and just left white patches on my face and clung to any dry patches and around my hair line. I have oily skin so thought this would be great. Do you apply it straight to the face without any moisturiser? And do you rub it in like a moisturiser or just pat it on?

I do both actually, depending on how oily my skin is that day. Hmm, maybe you´re using too much? That´s really weird.

I love hearing about all the things you’re discovering in the US as it reminds me of all the things I’ve been taking for granted here! I hope you’re having a great holiday!

I shall look out for the Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Body Mist Sunblock SPF 45 when i visit Florida next year. Ideal for not only my husband and myself but my two tiddlers who are 5&6 and hate having cream rubbed into their skin. x

Useful post, thank you :D I love the idea of the Clarins one, all the similar high street products have got pretty bad reviews :( The Chantecaille one sounds dreamy, but I spent a little too much on summer clothes to justify summer beauty products too! Can’t wait for the haul :)

My favourite sun cream is the Clinique face-cream because you only need a tiny amount and it doesn’t affect the way your make-up goes on :) I also like the light fresh scent of the product and it absorbs very easily hehe. I don’t tend to use sun cream for my body as i don’t usually burn that easily…but i know i should start using it to prevent my skin from being damaged. Thanks for sharing~x

The Clarins after-tan looks great! I was also suspicious about the IE products, especially since they make it so hard to find ingredient lists. But I’m glad to hear they seem to be doing their job!

Hey! Lovely post, really love your choice of products. I will be taking some inspiration from yours. But as a loyal follower and be honest? I didn’t like the photo- you usually take lovely/simple photos. But lining the sun products in a dull window sill is not really your blog style is it? sorry! but I was hoping you would at least be a bit creative ( on the beach or even somewhere else that u can tell u r actually on holiday)

I live in Southern Texas and let me tell you sunscreen isn’t really a choice here, it’s essential! I wear it everyday on my face and my favorite of all the ones I’ve tried is the Neutrogena Ultra sheer liquid spf 55. It absorbs quickly, mattifies, and provides a great base for makeup. I used to love the Neutrogena ultra sheer lotions, but it started to dry my face out WAY too much with continued usage and felt itchy. Not to mention they worked horribly as a makeup base. The liquid version doesn’t do that at all. I also like Borba sunblock, but it’s pretty expensive at $20 a bottle and not easily found. My best friend has really sensitive skin and she uses an Aveeno sunblock (which btw is a great skincare range you should check out!). I want to try the Clarin’s liquid sunscreen, but honestly I’m so happy with my Neutrogena one I think I’ll stick to it. Also I remember Lisa Eldridge blogging about the Neutrogena liquid sunscreen she picked up when she came to the U.S.
