The Weekend Post #3: Hairbrush Cleaning

So a few weeks back I spoke about how my hair was looking greasy again immediately after I washed it, I self-diagnosed myself as having a case of bad product build up and said how the Boots Expert Anti-Build Up Shampoo had really been helping. But a little thought popped into my head, if my hair is getting dirty more quickly then usual, perhaps it’s down to the tools I’m using. And sure enough I soon realised that it had never even occurred to me to give my hairbrushes a clean and treat them in the same way I do my makeup brushes – dur! So off I trotted to my bathroom, with a flannel, baby shampoo and this time my hairbrushes in tow…
Viola! Nice and clean brushes, luverly ;) Cleaning hairbrushes is pretty simple to do and works in the same way as you would clean your makeup brushes, give them a rinse with warm soapy water and leave them to dry naturally, you may also need to pull a bit of hair out them (I think I moulted enough hair to make a small toupee). The combination of this act and the Boots Expert shampoo means my hair is left shiny and smooth! I have also been using some new haircare, but I will save that for another post :) Hope you have all had a lovely weekend!
Much Love,
Vivianna x

my mother taught me this trick because my hair is long and oily and washing them every days makes the ends really dry!so once every 10 ten days i take them to the shower with me,and while i have shampoo on my hair, i comb them gently and then wash the brushes with water!it literaly take seconds!

    • http://www.viviannadoesmakeup.com/ Vivianna

That’s such a good idea! xx

I’ve never thought to clean my hairbrushes! Maybe that’ll explain why my hair is getting greasy a lot more than normal? Hmm, another chore to add to the list I think! hehe

When I was younger my mother would always make me clean out my brush. Usually before showering then bring it in and use in the shower. I haven’t done that in years…. maybe I should! Thanks for the excellent tip ;D

No problem hun! That’s such a good idea xx

Worryingly this had never occurred to me.. oops! I should probably clean mine soon too, they’re probably covered in oils and dry shampoo!  By the way, is one of your brushes natural bristle? I’m sure I read brush-care on bristle brushes a while ago and the instructions sounded very specific and awkward.. How did you clean yours, and is it okay?  Mine is boar bristle and maple wood so I’m sure submerging in water would do more harm than good :( . Wonderful blog by the way, I check daily to see if you’ve posted any more of your wisdom ;) xx

Yes natural bristle brushes are supposed to be cleaned in a special way, but I just make sure no water or anything gets in the root of the bristles and they’re fine :) xx

I have been trying to find the build up removal shampoo from Boots on my last trip to England but could not get my hands on it, I’ve just bought a shampoo from Guhl which is supposed to have the same effect, crossing my fingers for it to work! I just don’t understand how my hair gets greasy so quickly and will be on hairbrush cleaning duty more often from now on ! xx

Oooo hope it works out for you :) xx

  • Fianna B

God I totally never wash mine, I just remove the hair, but then again I use my main brush in the shower as hair easier to detangle … love your blog!!!

    • http://www.viviannadoesmakeup.com/ Vivianna

      Thank you hun! xx

  • Kim

I always leave my brush until you can’t see any more bristles because of all the hair! but its true you should treat it the same as a foundation brush

P.S check out my blog (its new so im trying to round up visitors/members) :-)

Haha! Thanks for the comment xx

I was always told to NEVER get Mason Pearsons wet, as it ruins the glue. I just use the cleaning brush they come with. Now that I think about it, that’s actually quite gross. I should probably find a way to disinfect it a bit:)

I know it’s probably not the best thing to get proper bristle brushes wet, but just try and keep water away from the root of the bristles :) xx
